  • BLOS (Beyond Line of sight) communications, between shore stations and naval units, are essential. The satellite is the major means used to enable this kind of communications, as it affords higher speed services. However, HF communications, despite having lower speeds, are regaining great importance, notably for the following reasons: Ships depend on satellite coverage. Using satellite is more expensive, and resources are more limited. Satellites are increasingly vulnerable. For these reasons, most nations continue to use HF communications, often as an alternative to satellite communications. The BRE1TA system (first enhancement of BRASS), a project of the NATO Communications and Information Agency (NCI Agency), in Spain involves upgrading the communications systems of the Spanish Navy's HF radio navigation stations, in order to provide them with IP technology over HF radio.

The NATO-BRASS (Broadcast and Ship to Shore) system is the NATO HF maritime communications network, providing automated support for communications between Naval Commands and their deployed Forces.

In Spain, the implementation of the Sp BRASS System involved the upgrading of the Madrid, Cádiz and Canary Islands Radio Stations, and the Communications Centres (CECOMs) of Madrid and La Flota (Rota, Cádiz).


  • Sunair 8220WB 1 kW HF Transmitter, Wideband The Sunair 8220WB 1-kW System operates continuously (100% duty) and consists of the Sunair RT-8500WB Software-Defined Wideband Next Generation HF SSB/ISB Transceiver, the F-9810 Post-selector, and the LPA-8220 1-kW Power Amplifier, all mounted on a pre-wired custom cabinet for ease of installation and maintenance. The RT-8500WB transceiver uses software-defined digital signal processing (DSP) technology, which supports the latest developments in high-speed waveform processing. This technology enhances the functionality of the CPU as well as the Synthesizer, Digital Audio, and Digital IF stages. It operates in USB, LSB, ISB, AMe, FMn, CW, and 48-kHz WBHF. The audio interface supports analog or VoIP connections, while the CPU allows for remote control and programming via Ethernet or serial port. 8220WB • High efficiency solid state design • Full power into load with VSWR up to 2:1 • Comprehensive BITE to LRU The RT-8500WB transceiver incorporates a next generation 48-kHz Wideband capable HF Modem and ALE controller. This provides a purpose-built standalone hardware platform for strategic and maritime WBHF Beyond Line-of-Sight (BLOS) and Line-of-Sight (LOS) radio communications. The Wideband Automatic Link Establishment (WALE) or Fourth Generation (4G ALE) controller compliant with MIL-STD-188-141D Appendix G is used in setting up and managing WBHF links. The WALE controller provides fast and robust link setups by dynamically adapting the bandwidth and frequency offset of wideband channels to avoid interference and optimize throughput. The WALE link setup controller also provides inter-operation with second generation ALE (2G ALE) and third generation ALE (3G ALE/FLSU). WALE supports (as 3G ALE) both synchronous and asynchronous modes. Advanced built-in-test (BITE) capability reports the status of the Sunair 8220WB 1-kW System down to the Lowest Replaceable Unit (LRU) level providing English messages on the display of the radio, and then to a remote site when configured. Individual LRU fault indication and the system’s intuitive modular design allows for ease of maintenance and upgrade throughout the equipment life cycle at minimal expense.   • Sunair T-10000 HP 10kW HF Transmitter The Sunair T-10000 HP 10kW Military HF Transmitter is the hallmark solution for mission critical communications applications requiring reliable coverage. The transmitter system combines solidstate radio and RF power amplification and control technology to produce a fail-safe high power solution that operates in a frequency range of 1.5 MHz to 30 MHz. Maximum power output is 10 kW at 100% duty cycle to facilitate long- range hemispheric communications when coupled with the appropriate antenna. Power is reducible in less than 1 dB steps down to 500 W level. Standard operating voltage is three phase 338 – 458 Vac, 47 to 63 Hz with a modest power requirement of ≤ 35 kVA. The Sunair T-10000 HP is supplied as an integrated system equipped with the Sunair T-8400 Software-Defined Next Generation HF SSB/ISB Transmitter. As part of this system, the amplifier architecture consists of eight IPA- 8210 intermediate power amplifier subsystems that are combined to produce final power output and managed by the Sunair HPAC High Power Amplifier Controller. The HPAC actively monitors system balance and performance, and provides power control and safety shutdown in the event of internal module failure such as power supplies, system failures such as air flow or over temperature or external failures such as high antenna VSWR and short or open circuit. Advanced built-in-test (BITE) capability reports the status of the T-10000 HP down to the Lowest Replaceable Module (LRM) level providing English messages on the HPAC and the T-8400 front panel displays, and then to a remote site when configured. Individual LRM fault indication and the system’s intuitive modular design allows for ease of maintenance and upgrade throughout the equipment life cycle at minimal expense. These highperforming niche products are in daily service as integral components of critical strategic communications solutions for leading defense, peacekeeping, and aviation agencies around the world. Modes of operation are AME, NB-FM, USB, LSB, ISB, CW, and FSK; Data implemented with internal or external modems. When paired with a companion receiver the T-10000 HP offers 2G and 3G Automatic Link Establishment (ALE) as an internal or external option in accordance with MIL-STD-188-141 A/B/C, FS1045A, and STANAG 4538. Frequency hopping compliant to STANAG 4444 and HF email/data transfer with Automatic Link Maintenance (ALM) compliant to STANAG 5066 are available with optional external controllers. Designed as a high-performance HF system the T-10000 HP complies with the radio requirements of MIL-STD-188-203- 1A and STANAG 5511/5522 (TADIL-A/Link 11 and NILE/Link 22) for tactical data link operation. It also complies with the performance requirements in MIL-STD-188-141C and STANAGs 4203 and 5031. The T-10000 HP is compatible with STANAGs 4285, 4529, 4415, 4481, 4539, and 5065 and MIL-STD-188-110B (including Appendix F ISB) HF modem waveforms. These waveforms can be provided with optional internal or external HF data modems. If equipped with the Internal data modem option the architecture of the T-10000 HP allows for the upgrade of the data modem to MIL-STD-188-110C and other future modem waveforms by a firmware upgrade from the front or rear panel of the T-8400. Full function control, programming and system monitoring/ BITE can be accomplished from the front panel controls and displays, or remotely via Ethernet or USB port. A USB port connector on the front panel is provided for ease of reprogramming the unit’s configuration.   • Sunair RCU-8310 Remote Control Unit The Sunair RCU-8310 is a full-function remote control unit, now capable of operating up to eight (8) transceivers, transmitters, or receivers from the 8400 series. The next-generation RCU is equipped with a larger 7-inch TFT display, which is now touchscreen, along with keyboard entry. Its front panel is physically identical to the front panel of the unit it controls. This ensures operational simplicity. The RCU offers a full set of operating modes, including AME, NB-FM, USB, CW, Data, as well as remote control of Automatic Link Establishment (ALE) functions when the RT-8400 is equipped with the internal ALE option. These capabilities match the operating modes available on the radio itself. The RCU-8310 also allows remote operation of Sunair peripheral equipment including the F-9810 PreSelector/Post-Selector, the LPA-8210/8220 Power Amplifiers, and the CU-9125/CU-9150 Antenna Couplers. It is possible to connect the RCU-8310 to the remote radio using RS-232/RS-422 for short distances, Ethernet for longer distances, or leased lines (requires the optional internal FSK modem). This next-generation receiver is equipped with a larger 7-inch TFT display, which is now touchscreen. It operates continuously (100% duty cycle) in AME, NB-FM, USB, LSB, ISB, CW, Data, or MELPebased Digital Voice modes. The R-8400 uses software-defined digital signal processing (DSP) technology, which supports the latest developments in high-speed waveform processing.   • Sunair F-9810B Pre/Postselector The Sunair F-9810B Pre/Postselector permits operating collocated (co-site) Sunair radios, whether the RT-8500WB Transceiver or any radio of the 9000E Series, on frequencies with as small as a 10% separation. The Sunair F-9810B is controlled by the Sunair radio it serves. As a pre-selector, the F-9810B provides an additional front-end selectivity stage, thus reducing the receiver desensitization and overload that normally occurs in the presence of strong adjacent RF transmissions. As a post-selector, the F-9810B rejects spurious outputs and broadband noise in the transmit signal before it reaches the Sunair LPA power amplifiers, thereby limiting interference to collocated receivers. In transmit mode, the F-9810B operates as postselector on the radio’s low output power path. Because of this, the F-9810B is fully operational as postselector with an RT- 8500WB regardless of whether the transceiver is driving the LPA-8200 at 100 mW or operating at its full 125-W output. A separate transmit antenna port provides the flexibility of using either a single antenna for transmission and reception or separate transmit and receive antennas. In addition, the keyline over coax feature prevents damage to the unit from high power RF transmission by reducing the control time delay of transmit-to-receive switching. The F-9810B offers a selectivity of 35 dB minimum (±10%), 40 dB typical, from the nominal tune frequency, with an ultimate rejection of 70 dB minimum. The unit tunes in 10 Hz increments, and tuning time is 10 ms maximum, making the F-9810B suitable for ALE applications. Furthermore, the F-9810B offers two levels of gain.
