NATO-BRASS (Broadcast and Ship to Shore) BRE1TA system
BRE1TA (BRASS Enhancement 1 Technical Architecture) is a major update to the NATO BRASS (Broadcast and Ship to Shore) HF Radio system.
- Core Function: BRE1TA upgrades existing shore HF stations to act as BLOS Access Points (HFAPs), providing reliable command and control for naval forces when satellite communications (SATCOM) are unavailable, jammed, or compromised.
- Primary Application: It supports Military Messaging (also known as Organizational or High-Grade Messaging), moving from legacy ACP 127 formal messaging to modern standards like STANAG 4406 and SMTP.
- 2025-2026 Status: As of early 2026, the system is being deployed via the BRIPES (BRASS IP Enhanced Software) package. In February 2025, NATO’s NCI Agency initiated the procurement of additional BRIPES deployable kits for Standing Naval Force (SNF) flagships to maintain C2 in degraded environments.
- IP Services: BRE1TA enables modern IP-over-radio services, including Web browsing (T-Web) and XMPP chat (T-Chat), over shortwave links.
- Technical Standards:
- STANAG 5066: Used for data-link protocols to provide IP services over HF.
- STANAG 4539: Introduced to provide higher HF bandwidth and throughput using advanced data modems.
- STANAG 4538: Implements 3G Automated Link Establishment (ALE) for automated radio control.
- Interoperability: The system remains backward compatible with BRASS Initial Core Capability (ICC) to ensure communication with legacy units and different branches of the armed forces.
- Software Basis: The BRIPES software package is the primary implementation of the BRE1TA requirements and is available to all NATO Allies.

The BRE2TA (BRASS Enhancement 2 Technical Architecture) is the next-generation evolution of the NATO BRASS (Broadcast and Ship to Shore) HF radio communications framework. While BRE1TA focuses on digitizing legacy messaging, BRE2TA is designed to introduce Wideband HF (WBHF) capabilities.
- Wideband HF (WBHF) Integration: The primary goal of BRE2TA is to transition from narrow 3kHz channels to wideband channels (up to 48kHz or more). This enables significantly higher data rates, comparable to early satellite or DSL speeds, over long-distance shortwave radio.
- High-Capacity IP Services: It aims to provide seamless, real-time IP data exchange, including streaming video, large file transfers, and high-speed chat.
- Tactical Interoperability: BRE2TA combines STANAG 4538 (Automatic Link Establishment) with MELPe digital voice standards to ensure robust tactical interoperability across the alliance.
- STANAG 5069: The foundational standard for Wideband HF waveforms used in BRE2TA-compliant systems.
- STANAG 4538: Provides the 3G Automated Link Establishment (ALE) and data link protocols for fast link setup and high-speed data bursts.
- STANAG 5066: Remains the core protocol for running IP applications over HF, optimized for the higher bandwidths provided by BRE2TA.
- Status: As of early 2026, BRE2TA is moving through procurement and assessment phases as NATO refines future requirements for high-capacity beyond-line-of-sight (BLOS) communication.
