Sunair LPA-8220 (1kW) HF POWER AMPLIFIER, WIDEBAND
The LPA-8220 1-kW HF Power Amplifier also used for the new Sunair 8220WB 1 kW HF Transmitter, Wideband, Sunair T-10000 HP 10kW HF Transmitter, Wideband & Sunair 5kW HF Transmitter, Wideband systems (transmitters and transceivers).
The Sunair 8220WB 1-kW System operates continuously (100% duty) and consists of the Sunair RT-8500WB Software-Defined Wideband Next Generation HF SSB/ISB Transceiver, the F-9810B Post-selector, and the LPA-8220 1-kW HF Power Amplifier, all mounted on a pre-wired custom cabinet for ease of installation and maintenance.
The RT-8500WB transceiver uses software-defined digital signal processing (DSP) technology, which supports the latest developments in high-speed waveform processing. This technology enhances the functionality of the CPU as well as the Synthesizer, Digital Audio, and Digital IF stages. It operates in USB, LSB, ISB, AMe, FMn, CW, and 48-kHz WBHF. The audio interface supports analog or VoIP connections, while the CPU allows for remote control and programming via Ethernet or serial port.

The Sunair LPA-8220 (1kW) HF Power Amplifier is a component of Sunair’s 8220 series wideband HF transmitter system, primarily used in defense, security, and aviation communications for reliable, high-power long-distance communication. Note that the similar, but more common, model is the Sunair LPA-9600 1kW amplifier.
Key Features
- Redundant Design: The amplifier utilizes a modular “soft-fail” design with redundant internal AC power supplies and multiple amplifier modules (four in the LPA-9600). This allows the unit to automatically switch to a lower power output (e.g., 500W) in the event of a module failure, ensuring continued operation.
- Rugged and Reliable: Designed for continuous duty in demanding environments, the amplifier is built to military standards (MIL-STD-810F for shock and vibration) for use in marine and land-based applications, including shipborne, shelterized, and fixed station installations.
- Comprehensive BITE (Built-In Test Equipment): The unit incorporates microprocessor-controlled BITE capability, with status indicators and an English language readout on the front panel that displays the cause of any malfunction, simplifying maintenance.
- Wide Frequency Range: The LPA amplifiers operate over the full HF frequency range of 1.5 MHz to 30 MHz.
- VSWR Protection: The amplifier delivers rated output into a load VSWR of up to 2:1 and is protected from damage at load VSWR above 3:1 (graceful degradation occurs between 2:1 and 3:1).
• High efficiency solid state design
• Full power into load with VSWR up to 2:1
• Comprehensive BITE to LRU
